What will happen to my residence permit during COVID19?

March 23, 2020 by Kathleen Parker Leave a Comment

This is the burning question. Here’s where to look if you had an appointment that got cancelled, your permit is going to expire soon and you can’t walk in to the foreigner’s office, or you have any other issues. Please be advised we might not have the answer either. This stuff is moving at the speed of light!

Service at the Berlin immigration offices (Friedrich-Krause-Ufer, Keplerstr.,  BIS) is severely disrupted. They are therefore not seeing anyone in person. They are processing everything by post or online application. We don’t know how long the offices will be out of action for the general public. They will only see you if you have a real emergency. Your travel plans probably won’t

If you have an appointment at the foreigner’s office, don’t go, unless you have a real emergency.

If you have an electronic residence permit that you’ve already applied for and just need to pick up, they will post it to you.

If your residence permit is about to run out and you can’t attend your appointment or walk in in person, they now have online forms for you to fill out. Read the FAQs – there is a lot of information there. Find out which scenario suits your situation and you can then fill out the appropriate form.

At this stage, the online forms are only available in German. You never know, they might add the forms in English in the future, and if they do, we will update this blog post. In the meantime, if you’d like help submitting the online forms for now, we can talk you through them. We’re offering 30-minute Life Admin slots for 19 EUR for this purpose. We’ll help you make sense of which form to fill out, go through it with you and give you templates for other things you need done – e.g. deferring your tax or asking your landlord for an extension on your rental payments.

Stay safe!
